When I was younger, my mom always said she wanted to write a book full of the moments that happened in our life. She wanted to date it back to when my daddy was little. The craziest events turn into the best stories for our family to share. We used to spend Thanksgiving in Charleston, South Carolina at my grandparents house. Grandma would cook the best three course meal options that followed a spread of delicious hors d’oeuvres. But that wasn’t the best part! The best part were the stories. We would listen to how my aunt and uncle would play tricks on my grandma by pretending my dad (the baby) had fallen out of the car. The joke continued until the day he actually fell out, and my grandmother wouldn’t believe them until she saw dad, scraped knees and all, through her rear view mirror. We listened to old voicemail messages from my grandma to my grandpa, who was stationed overseas. The messages said, “Jack, it’s Barbara. Vickie failed her math test today, John has a fever, and…oh….Barry just puked in the floor. Right next to where the dog peed. The refrigerator broke this morning and I’m going to need you to look at it when you get back. Love you. Come home soon.” Grandpa said some of those messages made him never want to come home. It must have been hereditary because the whit and comical events continued down into my dad’s family. We’ve had moments of love, like my thirteen year old self making coffee for my dad. (Who knew you didn’t mix the grounds with water and nuke it? That’s how we make hot cocoa.) Or my brother getting stuck in a circular 3 foot toy box and having to waddle down the hall like a turtle asking for help. Or writing “BARNEY” as a four year old on the passenger door of my dad’s new car with a rock. (I didn’t get punished as severely, because I did spell it correctly). There are hundreds of these stories in my family. I’m sure there are hundreds of these stories in your family. I believe it’s God’s way of sprinkling the world with seasoning. I want to bring you along as I document the seasonings of my life. I pray that they fill your soul with smiles, laughter, and encouragement.
