Today is Mother’s Day! I enjoyed a delicious lunch (of course, it was Mexican), and my family gave me a 90 minute relaxation massage yesterday. My day was overall relaxing yesterday. I woke up, worked out, tanned, and got my massage. What I didn’t realize was that I got insanely burned in the tanning bed before my massage. On my eyelids! The swelling and irritation didn’t set in 100% until I had my eyes closed for 90 minutes during the massage. Once I was told to open my eyes, I couldn’t. They were so swollen. But overall, it was a relaxing experience. With life lessons attached.
Today, my husband is giving me what we call a “Frankie Heck” mother’s day. This has started becoming a tradition. It’s in reference to the show The Middle where Frankie, the mother, is left alone at the house for one whole day while her family is elsewhere. She spends the whole day cleaning, fixing things, before she knows it, her day of relaxation has ended. She’s completely bummed because her family had a great time without her on the family outing. So they do a “re do” Mother’s Day and include her on the same outing. Long story, short, she gets hurt, has a miserable time, comes home and props her foot up for a whole day while her family is hanging out…at a relatively nice distance from her.
So, my family hung out yesterday together so that this afternoon (in between service), I can watch them play at a relatively nice distance, and do what I want to do. If they need juice or snacks or play dough or feel the need to whine about unimportant topics, their daddy has it covered. It’s the best! He’s the best.
So I chose to do something I, as mother of the year, never do: cook. I’m talking REALLY cook. I want to make homemade cinnamon rolls. From scratch. With yeast.
I found the recipe at tastesoflizzyt.com
I’ve done so good on my current eating habits, I needed to have the challenge of making something that I couldn’t resist for my family, and not eat the whole batch before they came out of the oven. Challenge accepted! One cinnamon roll is a whopping 364 calories. I’m going to enjoy a 70 calorie bite and leave the rest to my family. I got a little “icing crazy”, but hopefully once they cool, some of that will melt off.
My children gave me the sweetest gifts. Ellie wrapped up her favorite stuffed animal, Fat Cat, and told me I could sleep with it each night this week. Peyton made a handprint picture frame for me at daycare. He was so excited to give it to me that he broke the glass on the way to hand it to me. I could here it rattling beneath the wrapping paper. I took it out of the paper and read the sweet words:
“You’ll always clean the handprints
I leave upon the wall.
I seem to make a mess of things because I am very small.”
And it went on and on until the end-my favorite part.
“I made this just for you.
Love, Riley 2018.”
Well, I guess this will go right next to Ellie Little’s Christmas ornament I got for Christmas one year in my daughter’s day care class gifts.
Here’s a “Happy Mother’s Day” to you, to my mom, to me, and to Riley’s mom!
